Our Focus On: Operations Management
We focus on four ASC operations and management components proven to drive financial success:
· Experienced-Based Culture: Successful centers are 100% focused on the experience. That would be the experience that the surgeons, the staff and the patients all have in their relationship and interaction with the Center. Obviously, hospitals focus on the experience as well, but due to the size of an ASC, it is a must.
· Expense Management: The number one expense category in a surgery center is medical supplies followed by salaries. Constant hands-on management is a never-ending process and includes intimate relationships with vendors and extreme efficiency in staffing management. Successful ASC leaders are constantly tracking total manhours per surgery, salaries as a percent of net revenue and medical supplies and implantables as a percent of net revenue.
· Revenue Cycle Management: Revenue cycle and its management are the lifeblood of any facility. Successful outpatient centers are masterful in all aspects of the revenue cycle process including, but not limited to billing, coding and collections.
· Physician Satisfaction & Recruitment: Tied to the experience-based culture, ASCs are designed to and must operate as an efficient and convenient venue for surgeons to do their cases. Like expense management, it is a never-ending process and the avenue for ongoing margin enhancement via recruitment.
Our Focus On: Clinical Quality
We insist that our partners pursue and receive accreditation from Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (“AAAHC”). This accreditation helps ensure the ASC performs to the highest standards regarding:
· Safety & Outcomes: Infection control and adverse event (e.g., bad outcome, sentinel events, etc.) reporting and root cause analysis are key areas of focus. Physician, nurse, and other clinical staff capabilities and credentialling are a second area of focus.
· Procedure & Patient Selection: The number of procedures eligible for ASC reimbursement is increasing quickly. However, this does not mean that an organization and/or market is ready for this pace of adoption. In addition, pre-existing conditions, comorbidities and other factors limit what types of patients should be seen in an ASC and what types of prior medical clearances may be needed. We focus on these issues to help drive optimal quality.
Our Focus On: Stakeholder Alignment
We focus on tailoring the structure and details of the two key components that ensure the leadership and participants are all in alignment with the objectives and results. It is our goal to assist our partners in achieving their vision for outpatient surgery.
· Partnership Agreement: In addition to serving as the financial “clearinghouse”, an ASC partnership agreement typically includes authority over initial investor selection, subsequent participant approval and selection of third-party professional service providers.
· Governing Board: The ASC governing Board is the main body responsible for clinical quality, and typically uses a Medical Advisory Committee to oversee professional staff competency through the credentialling process, establish policies and procedures and clinical standards and monitors compliance with these standards. The Board also reviews all relevant financial and operational results, and approves any corrective actions as needed.
